The Challenges

Brazosport Regional Health System (BRHS) and QHR have successfully partnered in the hospital’s performance measurement and improvement initiatives for nearly a decade. After many years of success, the hospital recently renewed its commitment to quality.

QHR began by reevaluating and analyzing BRHS’ quality management organization and capabilities in five critical areas:

  • Strategy (Quality a part of strategy, Quality Plan meets requirements)
  • Infrastructure (information systems, evidencebased care, committee structure)
  • Process (core measures, dashboards, reporting process, action plans and outcomes)
  • Organization (model for quality management, roles and responsibilities, customer service, quality staffing)
  • Culture (consistency, culture of quality and safety, change management)

The QHR team:

  • Interviewed the hospital’s management team
  • Observed BRHS’ quality management processes and infrastructure
  • Gathered information regarding current operations
  • Selected an improvement methodology based on the hospital’s organizational culture and history
  • Provided leadership training that focused on leading performance improvement initiatives in each department and between departments.

The Outcome

  • Created a clear quality structure within the organization, focused on outcomes
  • Developed specific guidelines and standards for physician peer review
  • Developed a common language of performance improvement throughout the hospital
  • Implemented QHR Vantage Scorecard hospital-wide, a dashboard for administration and the board to monitor improvement initiatives, strength and growth areas
